T. Vishnudatta Jayaraman, Ph.D., founder and editor-in-chief of South Asian Herald, was recognized for excellence in journalism and contributions to the Indian American diaspora during the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin, GOPIO-Virginia’s 17th anniversary celebration on August 23 in Herndon, Virginia.
Jayaraman was among the recipients of the 2026 GOPIO-Virginia Awards of Excellence, which recognized contributions across several fields. The honorees included Dr. Hiren Pokharna for medicine, Dr. V.K. Raju for philanthropy, Dr. Siva Subramanian for education, Dr. Javad K. Hassan for technology, Dr. C.M. Prasad for social services, and Lalit Jha and Jayaraman for journalism.
Addressing the gathering, GOPIO-Virginia President and Chairman Jay Bhandari said, “This evening, we are honored to recognize exceptional individuals whose accomplishments, professional excellence, and dedication to society exemplify the highest ideals of our community.” He congratulated the recipients and wished them continued success.
“As we celebrate this milestone, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a vibrant, progressive, and united Indian American community,” Bhandari added.
Virginia state Senators Saddam Salim and Jennifer Boysko, along with Maddy White, district director for Rep. James Walkinshaw, joined Bhandari and GOPIO-Virginia Vice Presidents Johnson Myalil and Ram Gupta in presenting the award to Jayaraman.
Commending Jayaraman on being recognized with an Award of Excellence in Journalism, Congressman Suhas Subramanyam said, “For several years, he has covered the Indian American community in Virginia and across the country, highlighting the stories, achievements, and issues that matter to the diaspora.”
The Congressman added, “I commend Jayaraman’s dedication and commitment to journalism and his continued efforts to serve as a voice for the Indian American and broader South Asian diaspora.”
Congratulating Jayaraman, Senator Salim said, “As editor-in-chief of South Asian Herald, Jayaraman has consistently elevated stories that matter to our community. His commitment to thoughtful, rigorous reporting and the many accolades he has earned over the years reflect a career devoted to informing and connecting South Asian Americans.”
Calling the honor a “well-deserved” recognition, the Senator said Jayaraman had earned it through his “exceptional work and dedication to journalism.”
Senator Boysko also congratulated Jayaraman on being recognized for his dedication to society.
“I especially appreciate his journalistic integrity,” she said, adding that GOPIO-Virginia embraces the values of “inclusivity, mutual respect, and cultural harmony.”
The honorees also received Congressional Record statements from Walkinshaw, presented by White.
“Indian Americans have made countless contributions to the United States in the fields of business, education, medicine, science, technology, and public service while preserving and sharing their culture in a manner that promotes tolerance and mutual understanding,” the document stated.
Walkinshaw invited his congressional colleagues and the Speaker of the House to join him in congratulating the award recipients on their accomplishments.
“I commend them for their service to their communities and to our nation, and I wish them success in all their future endeavors,” he stated.
