Meghalaya is preparing to take its premium pineapple brand to larger domestic and international markets after securing record sales and new marketing partnerships at the fourth Meghalaya Pineapple Festival in New Delhi, signaling the state’s next phase of agricultural transformation.
The three-day festival, which concluded at Dilli Haat in New Delhi, recorded sales of 30 metric tons of fresh pineapples, up sharply from 15.4 metric tons last year and 7.7 metric tons during the inaugural event in 2023. State officials said the steady increase reflects growing consumer acceptance of Meghalaya’s premium fruit and validates efforts to build a market-driven agricultural economy.
The focus is now shifting from festival sales to creating year-round demand through organized retail, e-commerce and institutional buyers.
A major outcome of the event was the signing of agreements with Flipkart and NCDEX e Markets Ltd. (NeML), partnerships that the Meghalaya government expects will help expand the reach of its agricultural products beyond seasonal promotional events. Officials said the collaborations would also support marketing of other high-value products such as Lakadong turmeric, ginger, honey and processed foods.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the government’s objective is to ensure farmers benefit from better prices by strengthening every stage of the agricultural value chain—from production and aggregation to branding, processing and market access.
The festival also brought together growers, retailers, exporters, food processors and hospitality companies, creating opportunities for direct business engagement. Officials said many participating farmers established commercial contacts that could translate into long-term supply arrangements.
Alongside business meetings, the event showcased Meghalaya’s cuisine, handicrafts and music, presenting agriculture as part of a broader rural economy linked to tourism and entrepreneurship.
With consumer demand rising and new commercial channels opening, Meghalaya is positioning its pineapple as a flagship brand for the state while using the model to promote other specialty crops. The government believes expanding value-added processing and strengthening market linkages will be key to increasing farm incomes and making Meghalaya a leading supplier of premium horticultural products from India’s Northeast.
