Morocco ended Canada’s impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory in the Round of 16, becoming the first team to secure a place in the quarterfinals. The result also made Canada the first of the tournament’s three co-hosts to be eliminated.
Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi starred for Morocco with two second-half goals in the 50th and 82nd minutes, while Sofiane Rahimi sealed the victory with a goal deep into stoppage time in the 90+8th minute.
Despite the final scoreline, the match was far more competitive than the margin suggested. Canada controlled much of the first half and created several promising scoring opportunities but failed to capitalize on its chances. That inability to convert possession into goals ultimately proved decisive.
Morocco, ranked sixth in the world, weathered Canada’s early pressure before taking control after halftime. Five minutes into the second half, Ounahi collected a free kick near the top of the penalty area and drove the ball past goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to give Morocco the lead.
Seeking an equalizer, Canada coach Jesse Marsch made attacking changes, bringing on Cyle Larin for Tani Oluwaseyi in the 63rd minute. Canada earned a free kick in the 78th minute, but Jonathan David’s effort sailed over the crossbar.
Morocco doubled its advantage in the 82nd minute when Ounahi finished a swift counterattack for his second goal of the match. Canada continued to press forward in search of a breakthrough, introducing Jonathan Osorio and Jayden Nelson late in the contest, but the breakthrough never came. Alphonso Davies did not feature in the match.
Rahimi added Morocco’s third goal on another counterattack in the closing moments of stoppage time to complete the victory.
Morocco now advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face the winner of the France-Paraguay Round of 16 match.
Although Canada’s World Cup journey ended in disappointment, the tournament marked the nation’s best-ever performance at a senior men’s FIFA World Cup. Entering the competition without a victory in the tournament’s history, Canada advanced to the Round of 16 after finishing second in Group B.
Canada opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, followed with a 6-0 victory over Qatar, and concluded the group stage with a 2-1 loss to Switzerland in Vancouver. The co-host then defeated South Africa in the Round of 32 to reach the knockout stage.
Morocco earned its place in the Round of 16 by defeating the Netherlands in a penalty shootout before ending Canada’s memorable World Cup run in Houston.
