Esha Deol is set to explore the horror-comedy genre for the first time with the upcoming film Ghunghat. Directed by Rajiv S. Ruia and produced by Bangalore-based producer Devesh Kumar under the banner of Native Cinemas, the film promises a blend of spooky thrills, comedy, emotions and social messaging—a common ingredient of most horror comedies.
While Esha Deol has previously appeared in horror films such as Darling and the thriller Kucch To Hai, Ghunghat marks her first project that combines horror and comedy within a single narrative.
Speaking about the film, Esha said, “Ghunghat is a completely new genre for me to explore. I have always enjoyed being part of comedies and have done horror earlier, but this is a mix of both. What I loved about the script is that along with the fun and spooky elements, it also carries a meaningful message. It’s emotional, entertaining and something very different for me as an actor.”
Set in the mysterious village of Jangipura, Ghunghat revolves around the haunting spirit of Bhuri, whose tragic past transforms into a terrifying curse for the villagers. The story combines supernatural suspense with humor, romance, fantasy and emotional drama.
Director Rajiv S. Ruia, known for his work in children’s animation films (the My Friend Ganesha franchise and Main Krishna Hoon) and horror entertainers (Saansein, Mushkil: Fear Behind You and X Ray: The Inner Image) is bringing his signature style to the project, aiming to create a family entertainer with both chills and comedy.
Esha not only acts in her first horror comedy but also becomes the first Deol to do so, as neither parents Dharmendra and Hema Malini, nor brothers Sunny and Bobby Deol have ever acted in any film of this genre.
