IPL 2026 Week 5: Lower Scores, Higher Drama as Bowlers Begin to Step Up

We have now entered the latter half of IPL 2026, and the results continue to fluctuate as the playoff race intensifies. Week 5 was the complete opposite of the previous week. After several days of explosive batting, towering totals, and relentless six-hitting, bowlers stepped up in a major way, producing thrilling low-scoring contests while still delivering the high drama that defines the IPL.

Sunday began with an economical pace-bowling masterclass from the Gujarat Titans, who defeated the Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets. Kagiso Rabada, Jason Holder, and Mohammed Siraj starred with the ball, restricting Chennai to just 159/7. Gujarat then followed with a calm and measured chase, led by Sai Sudharsan’s 87, sealing victory with more than three overs to spare.

Sunday evening brought the first Super Over of the 2026 IPL season, with Kolkata Knight Riders defeating Lucknow Super Giants in dramatic fashion. Lucknow started brilliantly with the ball, reducing Kolkata to 93/7 as Mohsin Khan produced an outstanding 5/23. However, a trademark Rinku Singh rescue act, an unbeaten 83, lifted Kolkata to a far more competitive 155/7. Lucknow’s batting struggles continued during the chase, but the game went right down to the final ball. Needing seven off the last delivery, Mohammed Shami launched Kartik Tyagi for six to level the scores and force a Super Over.

Unlike the main game, though, the Super Over was completely one-sided. Sunil Narine once again proved himself a master of the format, taking both Lucknow wickets in his first three deliveries and conceding just one run. Needing only two to win, Rinku Singh finished things immediately with a boundary off the first ball.

Monday produced perhaps the most shocking game of the season so far as Royal Challengers Bengaluru demolished Delhi Capitals. RCB have already been one of the best bowling units in the tournament, but even they could not have predicted reducing Delhi to 8/6 inside four overs. RCB’s own infamous record of 49, the lowest total in IPL history set in 2017, looked in real danger of being broken. However, Abishek Porel and David Miller offered brief resistance to ensure Delhi avoided that humiliation. Delhi were eventually bowled out for 75, with Josh Hazlewood claiming 4/12 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar taking 3/5. The chase was predictably straightforward, as RCB reached the target in the seventh over with nine wickets in hand.

Punjab Kings’ unbeaten run finally came to an end on Tuesday against Rajasthan Royals. Batting first, Punjab posted an imposing 222/4, powered by Marcus Stoinis’ explosive 62* off just 22 balls. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided Rajasthan with another blistering start. Despite a middle-overs slowdown, Donovan Ferreira’s unbeaten 57, alongside Shubham Dubey, guided Rajasthan home in the final over.

Sunrisers Hyderabad made another 200-plus chase look remarkably routine on Wednesday, defeating Mumbai Indians by six wickets. Mumbai piled up a massive 243/5, with Ryan Rickelton stealing the spotlight through a sensational 123* off just 55 balls. As usual, “Travishek” attacked from the outset, with Travis Head taking center stage this time, smashing 76 off 30 deliveries. That rapid start laid the foundation for Heinrich Klaasen’s unbeaten 65, as Hyderabad completed the chase in the penultimate over to extend their winning streak to five matches.

Bowling returned to center stage on Thursday as Gujarat Titans defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru by four wickets. The match was the second-highest attended fixture ever at the massive Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with more than 98,000 fans in attendance. An opening stand from Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli gave RCB early momentum, but after their dismissals and another disciplined bowling effort, the defending champions were limited to 155. The chase was slightly shaky, largely due to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s excellent 3/28. Still, early cameos from Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, combined with limited support for Bhuvneshwar, allowed Gujarat to secure the win with four overs remaining.

Delhi Capitals responded emphatically on Friday, chasing down 226 against Rajasthan Royals in a seven-wicket victory. Rajasthan captain Riyan Parag finally delivered with the bat, scoring 90, while Donovan Ferreira continued his excellent form to help lift Rajasthan to 225/6. Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul dominated the chase early, putting together a 110-run opening partnership inside the first 10 overs while scoring 62 and 75 respectively. Ashutosh Sharma and Tristan Stubbs then comfortably finished the chase in the 19th over, ending Delhi’s run of three consecutive defeats.

Friday also featured another edition of the IPL’s version of El Clasico, as Chennai Super Kings faced Mumbai Indians. Unlike the dramatic reverse fixture at Wankhede, this contest was far less chaotic. Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dhir gave Mumbai a promising start, but a middle-order collapse limited them to 159/7. Chennai approached the chase intelligently, recognizing the modest target. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma both produced composed half-centuries, guiding Chennai home comfortably.

Stars of the Week

Donovan Ferreira: Ferreira has quickly emerged as an exciting figure in South African cricket over the past year. After impressing for Oval Invincibles in The Hundred with several impactful late cameos, he has brought that same finishing energy into the IPL. With an average of 45.8, a strike rate of 177, and 16 sixes, Ferreira is developing into the ideal modern T20 finisher.

Jason Holder: A veteran of the T20 circuit, Jason Holder has returned to the IPL and immediately made his experience count. While his wicket tally has not been particularly eye-catching, Holder has been crucial through his control and discipline, recording an economy rate of 7.26 across Gujarat’s two wins this week. He was deservedly named Player of the Match against RCB. Having only recently entered the XI and played just three matches so far, Holder still looks capable of offering much more to Gujarat, both through his performances and leadership presence.
