Nepal Govt Designates Sept 7 as National Mourning Day for Rasuwa Flood Victims

Nepal’s government has declared September 7, a National Day of Mourning to honor those killed in the devastating floods in Rasuwa.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday afternoon, government spokesperson and Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel said.

The National Day of Mourning will be observed on September 7, the 13th day after the disaster, in accordance with the Hindu tradition of conducting death rites on the 13th day following a person’s death.

The Cabinet decision said national mourning would be observed “in honor of those who lost their lives” in the unprecedented floods in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa. The national flag will be flown at half-mast at government offices across Nepal, as well as at Nepali embassies and diplomatic missions abroad.

The Cabinet also approved additional support for security personnel and civil servants involved in search and rescue operations. They will receive risk allowances and meal expenses, while those injured during the operations will be provided free treatment.

Families of personnel who die during rescue operations will receive NPR 1 million for each deceased person, Pokharel said.

The government also accepted a $5 million grant from the Asian Development Bank for rescue and relief efforts in flood-affected communities.

It approved a package of relief measures, including tax and customs concessions and an integrated business recovery plan aimed at helping individuals, industries and businesses resume operations following the disaster.
