The Budapest Symphony Orchestra premiered “United We Stand Tall” a powerful new symphonic cantata marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, at its Spring Festival Concert held at the historic Pesti Vigadó, on April 26.

Conducted by Italian American maestro Anthony Armoré, the performance brought together a full orchestra of 70 musicians and a 33-member choir, creating a sweeping musical experience that reflected themes of loss, remembrance, and resilience. Tenor soloist Papp Viktor and alto soloist Shalini Singh were featured in the performance, which drew an international audience, according to a statement.

The cantata was composed by Chennai-based composer Ganesh B. Kumar and commissioned by patron, curator, and librettist Ram. The libretto, co-written by Ram and Georgina Margarite Ezra, blends poetic expression with philosophical reflection, forming a narrative arc that moves from tragedy to hope. Designed for tenor, choir, and orchestra, the work explores the enduring strength of the human spirit in the aftermath of one of the defining events of the 21st century.

The premiere formed part of a broader concert program that included classical and contemporary works, such as compositions by Mozart, Brahms, and Schubert, as well as pieces by modern composers. Another composition by Kumar was also featured, underscoring his growing prominence in the field of Western classical music in India.

The event attracted several dignitaries, including representatives from the Embassy of India in Hungary and the Embassy of Colombia. Officials present included diplomats and cultural representatives, highlighting the performance’s cross-cultural and international significance. Indian Ambassador Anshuman Gaur conveyed his best wishes to the organizers and performers, though he was unable to attend.

Beyond the concert hall, United We Stand Tall is set to reach wider audiences through its association with the upcoming documentary film Remains of a Day: Grace at Ground Zero, scheduled for release in September 2026. The film, directed and produced by John W. Sutherlin, Rob Olmstead III, and Ram, will use the cantata as a central thematic and musical element. The project also features contributions from 3-time Grammy Award-winning composer Ricky Kej.

Ram, who works across music, film, and literature, continues to expand her global artistic collaborations. Her recent and ongoing projects aim to bridge symphonic and cinematic storytelling, bringing together artists from diverse cultural backgrounds. She is also involved in future productions that seek to create socially meaningful content through music and film.

Staged in the Ceremonial Hall of Pesti Vigadó—once frequented by composers such as Franz Liszt and Claude Debussy—the premiere of United We Stand Tall highlighted the evolving nature of the European symphonic tradition. By incorporating South Asian creative influences into a classical Western framework, the performance underscored the unifying power of music in a global cultural landscape.
