The connection of cultures and continents can be achieved by collaborating with great minds, such as a musical maverick and a poetic filmmaker. Ricky Kej, who has won three Grammys, and Executive Producer Sumathy Ram have collaborated on a global feature song for the Prime trailer of GEVI, revealing an emotionally charged English-language anthem called ‘SET ME FREE!’.
The film, which is set to be released on Amazon Prime Video, will showcase its message of resilience, community, and survival on a global scale. Netflix is streaming the movie Gevi and it is expected to be released on Prime globally soon, according to a statement from the producers.
The Tamil-language survival action drama selected for the 98th Academy Awards has already captivated audiences with its visuals and intensity. With the release of its new trailer featuring “SET ME FREE!” the film takes on an even “deeper resonance.”
A Song Born from Survival
At the heart of GEVI lies the story of a remote hill village racing against natural calamities and bureaucratic hurdles to save a woman in labor. Directed by Tamil Dhayalan and produced by Jagan Jaya Surya, who also served as cinematographer, the film is inspired by true events and unfolds against the rugged beauty of the Western Ghats, the statement added.
For Ram, the story was not just “cinematic,” it was “personal.” Years ago, newly relocated to the United States and living far from extended family, Ram faced a harrowing medical emergency during pregnancy. Complications struck suddenly, and what followed was an outpouring of support from a student community that refused to let her face the crisis alone. Friends rushed her to the hospital, stayed through the ordeal, and ensured she was surrounded by compassion during recovery after the loss of her child. That experience became the emotional seed for “SET ME FREE!”
“Her poetry – written long before the film – mirror both Mandharai’s struggle in the film and Ram’s own journey through vulnerability and endurance,” it added. “The song becomes a cry for divine guidance, human solidarity, and maternal strength. It is not simply a promotional single; it is an offering.”
Global Collaboration
To translate Ram’s poetry into a sonic experience for Netflix’s global audience, she turned to Kej – a composer whose career blends musical excellence with a humanitarian vision.
The statement maintained that Kej, known internationally for works such as Winds of Samsara and Divine Tides, brought his signature orchestral depth and global sensibility to the project. Working alongside producer and arranger Vanil Veigas, the track layers intricate strings by Siddharth Basrur with driving percussion from Shivaraj Natraj, creating a rhythm that mirrors urgency and hope. The vocals delivered by Tabita Rose, Laura Dickinson, and Shivaraj Natraj – rise with cinematic intensity, giving Ram’s lyrics emotional breadth and universality.
“Together, Ram and Kej have crafted a soundscape that feels at once intimate and epic and that is rooted in the hills of Tamil Nadu yet resonant across continents,” it added.
From the Western Ghats to the World
GEVI is not just a “survival drama.” It is a story of community mobilizing in crisis, villagers carrying a laboring woman through treacherous terrain, defying weather, darkness, and infrastructure gaps. It reflects the reality of rural vulnerability while celebrating collective courage.
“For Ram, who owns land on her home hillside, she understands both the serenity and risks of nature-bound living – especially the challenge of accessing emergency care in remote areas. Her involvement in GEVI extends beyond songwriting,” it added. “As Executive Producer, she has supported the young filmmaking team, championed global distribution efforts, and continued work toward establishing the MSV hospital initiative in Vellagavi.”
Through her companies, SunMoonStars Film Studio and StarsMusicStudio, Ram continues to produce projects where storytelling and music intersect with humanitarian purpose.
