The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations has strongly condemned recent attacks on United Nations peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
In a statement, the Mission emphasized that UN Peacekeeping represents “multilateralism in action,” carried out by personnel deployed in conflict zones under challenging conditions with an international mandate.
“We condemn the recent attacks on UN Peacekeepers deployed in UNIFIL, and pay our homage to the fallen Blue Helmets,” the statement said. “We urge all parties to ensure the safety and security of the Peacekeepers.”
Highlighting India’s longstanding role, the statement noted that the country is among the largest and longest-serving contributors to UN Peacekeeping operations, and has also suffered the highest number of casualties in the line of duty.
It further underscored that “India piloted the UN Security Council resolution 2589, which seeks Accountability for Crimes against Peacekeepers, which we will continue to pursue.”
