Brescia in Italy holds a significance for the overseas Punjabi community similar to that of Brampton and Surrey in Canada.
This major hub in Northern Italy consistently observes key Sikh religious festivals, including Maghi, Hola Mohalla, Vaisakhi, and the Prakash Utsavs of Sikh Gurus, including Guru Granth Sahib.
Last Sunday, Brescia was awash in “Kesri” as it resonated with the beats of “Nagaras,” “Dhols,” and displays of traditional “Gatka” to mark the Sikh New Year. Several thousand Sikhs, not only from across Italy but also from other parts of Europe, gathered in the city for the second time this month, this time to celebrate the Sikh New Year. The town is also preparing to host another large Nagar Kirtan in April to mark Vaisakhi.

Italian cities, particularly those with significant Sikh populations, are transformed during Nagar Kirtans held to commemorate important Sikh festivals, with streets reflecting the colors and spirit of the Khalsa.
The Punjabi Sikh community is spread across rural and semi-urban areas in Northern Italy, with thousands residing in the region and primarily engaged in agriculture and manufacturing. The community is well-established, with several gurdwaras, including those in Flero and Castenedolo, serving as important centers for religious and social activities such as Vaisakhi processions and community gatherings.
Brescia is among the principal centers of Sikh settlement in Italy, where many are employed in labor-intensive agricultural sectors, including dairy production associated with Parmesan cheese. The gurdwaras in Flero and Castenedolo serve as key gathering points for the community.
Gurdwara Singh Sabha Flero, in collaboration with local congregations, organized a large Nagar Kirtan in Brescia. Guided by the teachings of the sacred Sri Guru Granth Sahib and led by the Panj Pyare, the procession commenced from Via Corsica with the resounding chants of “Bole So Nihal.”

The procession was welcomed by Sikh congregations along its route, with langar, or community kitchen services, arranged throughout. Various Ragi and Dhadi jathas contributed to the spiritual atmosphere through devotional recitations and historical narratives. Devotees also chanted “Satnam Waheguru” along the route.
Karamjit Singh, President of Gurdwara Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, commended the community for its strong participation in the Nagar Kirtan marking the Sikh New Year.
Prithipal Singh of the World Sikh Soldiers Memorial Society noted that, as in previous years, hundreds of Italians joined the celebrations and expressed appreciation for the contributions of Punjabi immigrants to the development of the region.
Prabhjot Singh was recently in Italy for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
