The English teams, England and Scotland, concluded their campaigns on a high note at the Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, delivering strong performances in the final matches of the tournament.

England clinched the title with a 2–0 victory over host India in the gold medal match, while Scotland secured the bronze medal by defeating Italy 1–0 in a closely contested playoff.

With their performances in the tournament, England, India, and Scotland have all qualified for the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup, scheduled to be held in August this year.

Grace Balsdon (13’) and Elizabeth Neal (43’) scored the goals for England in the final.

Backed by a vocal home crowd, India began the match on the front foot. Within the first two minutes, Navneet Kaur earned a penalty corner for the hosts. However, her drag flick was denied by the England goalkeeper.

India displayed discipline in defense while continuing to push forward into the opposition’s half. England gradually settled into the match and earned a penalty corner with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Grace Balsdon (13’) converted the opportunity with a powerful drag flick, marking her fifth penalty corner goal of the tournament and giving England an early lead.

The second quarter unfolded in a similar fashion, with both teams maintaining tight defensive structures. India registered eight circle penetrations in the first half and continued probing England’s defense but could not find a way past the goalkeeper.

Holding the lead, England controlled the tempo by maintaining possession and circulating the ball effectively. India created a few promising moments but struggled to convert them into goals.

England extended its advantage in the third quarter through Elizabeth Neal (43’). The midfielder’s attempt took a deflection off an Indian defender before beating goalkeeper Bichu Devi, giving England a 2–0 lead heading into the final quarter.

India continued to press forward in search of a comeback, while England remained composed and avoided retreating into a defensive shell. In the closing moments, India earned another penalty corner, but the hosts were unable to convert and ultimately suffered a 2–0 defeat.

Meanwhile, Hockey India congratulated Indian captain Salima Tete for completing her 150th international cap, a milestone she achieved during the final.

Known for her pace and tireless work rate in midfield, Salima made her international debut during the 2016 Test matches against Australia in Melbourne. Since then, the 25-year-old midfielder from Jharkhand has developed into one of the most influential players in the national setup, creating numerous scoring opportunities for her teammates while scoring 16 goals herself.

Salima became an Olympian at the age of 19 when she was part of the Indian team that finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The experience proved to be a turning point in her career, as she emerged as one of the team’s standout performers in the years that followed.

She was named the Rising Player of the Tournament at the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 in Muscat, where India finished third. Salima also captained the Indian side at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2021 in Potchefstroom, South Africa, where the team finished fourth.

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, she scored a crucial goal in the third-place match against New Zealand, helping India secure its first official victory over the Kiwis through a penalty shootout and claim the bronze medal. She was also part of the Indian team that won the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup Spain 2022.

Salima continued her impressive form in 2023, playing a key role in India’s bronze medal campaign at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Later that year, she delivered an outstanding performance at the Jharkhand Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023, scoring five goals in seven matches and earning the Player of the Tournament award.

In March 2023, Salima was appointed an AHF Athletes Ambassador, further reflecting her growing stature in international hockey and her commitment to athlete representation.

Her leadership qualities were recognized in 2024 when she was appointed captain of the Indian women’s hockey team. Under her leadership, India won gold at the Bihar Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Rajgir 2024 and later secured a silver medal at the Women’s Asia Cup in 2025.

Salima’s achievements have also been recognized with several prestigious honors. In 2021, she received the Hockey India Asunta Lakra Award for Upcoming Player of the Year (Women Under 21). In 2023, she was awarded the Hockey India Balbir Singh Sr. Award for Player of the Year. In 2024, she was honored with the Arjuna Award for her outstanding contribution to Indian hockey.

Congratulating Salima on her milestone, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said, “Completing 150 international caps at such a young age is a wonderful achievement and speaks volumes about Salima’s talent, consistency, and commitment to Indian hockey. She has grown tremendously as a player over the years and has led the team with great energy and maturity. Salima’s journey from Jharkhand to captaining the Indian Women’s Hockey Team is truly inspiring, and on behalf of Hockey India, I congratulate her on this special milestone and wish her continued success.”

Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh added, “Salima Tete has been one of the most exciting and influential players in Indian women’s hockey in recent years. Her ability to lead from the front, both with her performances and her attitude, has made her a vital member of the team. Reaching 150 caps is a proud moment for her, her family, and Indian hockey as a whole. We congratulate her on this landmark and look forward to seeing her achieve many more milestones in the future.”
