New York Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar has called on Whole Foods, which is preparing to open a store in her district, to “demonstrate its commitment to being a responsible and engaged neighbor by taking concrete steps” that benefit local residents.
“As the chain seeks to join the Ridgewood family, it is critical that it recognize its role in supporting the local residents and small businesses that make Ridgewood thrive,” Rajkumar said in a statement.
She emphasized that Whole Foods must ensure its presence delivers meaningful benefits to the community, beginning with local hiring. Rajkumar noted that Ridgewood is home to a diverse and talented workforce and said the company should create employment opportunities for neighborhood residents by drawing from this local talent pool.
“I urge Whole Foods to support our vibrant and historic local businesses by selling and featuring locally sourced products. Highlighting these world-class businesses will help preserve Ridgewood’s unique character and strengthen its local economy,” she added. “I also call on Whole Foods to accept the benefit and assistance cards New Yorkers rely upon, including SNAP/EBT, OTC cards, and other health and nutrition benefit programs, so that all residents can access affordable, healthy food.”
Rajkumar further stressed that the store should serve the full spectrum of the community and ensure that healthy food options are accessible to as many residents as possible.
She also said Whole Foods must act as a “good corporate citizen” by joining her efforts to address food insecurity in the district.
“The grocer should commit surplus food to local pantries and food drives, and I welcome a partnership in my ongoing food distribution initiatives throughout the district. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of families struggling to access nutritious food,” she said.
Whole Foods has an opportunity to demonstrate that it can be a constructive partner in building a “stronger, healthier, and more connected Ridgewood,” Rajkumar said, adding, “I look forward to holding the company accountable and ensuring that our community always benefits from its presence.”
