New York Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar said she is working closely with emergency responders and support agencies following a devastating fire on December 1, 2025, in Richmond Hill that displaced 19 residents and injured two people.

“I have been in direct contact with the 102nd Precinct, FDNY Engine 294/Ladder 143, and the American Red Cross,” Assemblywoman Rajkumar said on December 2. “I will continue working closely with all responding agencies to ensure every displaced resident receives the urgent support and long-term assistance they need during this incredibly difficult time.”

According to the Assemblywoman, the fire broke out late on December 1, quickly escalating into a five-alarm blaze that spread across four buildings. The incident caused severe structural damage and left multiple families without homes.

“My heart is with every person affected,” she said, noting that fires of this scale have become increasingly frequent due to the rapid spread through cocklofts, an ongoing structural hazard in the community.

Rajkumar emphasized the need for preventative measures and pointed to her legislative proposal, the Residential Structure Fire Prevention Act (A1753), which would provide financial assistance for homeowners to remove fire-prone cockloft spaces. 

“That is why I introduced the Residential Structure Fire Prevention Act (A1753), which provides financial support for homeowners to eliminate these dangerous spaces. We must pass this bill now to prevent future tragedies and save lives,” she said. “To the families affected: I stand with you, and will do all I can to help you with the resources, stability, and support you need.”

She also expressed gratitude to the more than 200 firefighters and EMS personnel who responded to the emergency. “Your courage, professionalism, and unwavering dedication protect our community every single day. We are profoundly grateful,” she added.
