Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman Welcomes Federal Court Ruling Ensuring SNAP Funding During Shutdown

Maryland Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman has welcomed a federal judge’s ruling requiring the federal government to release funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the ongoing federal shutdown.

“I am deeply relieved by today’s court ruling requiring the federal government to fund SNAP benefits. This decision is a victory for the more than 680,000 Marylanders, including children, seniors, and working families, who rely on these benefits to put food on the table, and for the thousands of small businesses that depend on SNAP spending to sustain jobs and local economies,” Comptroller Lierman said in a statement issued on October 31, 2025.

Comptroller Lierman emphasized that SNAP serves as a vital safety net and economic stabilizer, with every dollar in benefits quickly circulating through Maryland communities to support grocers, farmers, and retailers, while generating measurable growth in the state’s GDP. She noted that an abrupt suspension of the program would have caused immediate hardship for families and created damaging ripple effects throughout the economy.

“I stand ready to work with Governor Moore, Attorney General Brown, our General Assembly, our federal partners and all Marylanders to ensure that no family is forced to choose between paying bills and buying food,” she added. “The well-being of our residents and the stability of our economy depend on it.”
