Hicksville, NY — The Association of Indians in America’s (AIA) New York Chapter is set to host its 38th Annual Deepavali Festival on October 11, moving its iconic celebration from Manhattan’s South Street Seaport to Overlook Beach in Babylon, Long Island.
Organizers say the event promises to be “bigger and grander” than ever before, with an expanded lineup of performances, cultural showcases, and community activities.
The announcement was made on October 1 at the Asa Mai Temple in Hicksville, where AIA leaders briefed the press and over 150 supporters. Alongside the traditional grand fireworks display, this year’s festival introduces new attractions, including a recreation of an illuminated Ayodhya with Ram Darbar, a Bhakti Marga Kirtan Concert, and a Heritage India Fashion Show.
AIA-NY President Beena Kothari emphasized the significance of the move. “Our 38th Deepavali Festival’s move from Manhattan’s South Street Seaport to Long Island’s shores represents not just a change of venue but a wave of cultural expansion.

Together with our team, our partners, and the entire community, we’re building a bridge of light, unity, and joy that connects every generation of Indians in America.”
Former AIA National President Animesh Goenka noted that logistical challenges around fireworks in Manhattan played a role in the decision. “What is a Diwali celebration without fireworks?” he said, adding that AIA-NY’s Deepavali remains the oldest and most authentic celebration of Indian culture and heritage in New York.
Other leaders, including AIA National President Gobind Munjal, along with Nilima Madan, Harish Thakkar, and Harsh Vyas, urged the community to join in large numbers. Local dignitaries such as Bobby Kalotee, Chairman of the Nassau County Human Rights Commission; Jasbir Jay Singh, President of IALI; and Deepak Bansal and Vimal Goyal, co-Presidents of the India Day Parade, congratulated Kothari on her leadership, according to the organizers.
Several sponsors and partners also highlighted their participation. Harish Goyal of the Zee Group announced their sponsorship through Yo1 Health Resort. Celebrity designer Prashant Goyal shared plans for a fashion show showcasing India’s heritage. Representatives from Bhakti Marga, founded by Paramahamsa Vishwananda, previewed their kirtan concert, while filmmaker Neha Lohia described the Ram Setu presentation as a symbol of unity and inclusivity.
The evening will culminate in a 20–30 minute fireworks show at 7 PM, this time staged from the shore, marking a shift from its previous waterfront tradition in Manhattan. Organizers expect participation from lawmakers, dignitaries, celebrities, and the Consul General of India in New York, Binaya Srikanta Pradhan.
