New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, the first Indian American woman elected to state office, took center stage at “Style Across the Aisle,” an inspiring event that brought together New York’s fashion, civic, and cultural communities to highlight emerging local designers.

At the event, on September 10, 2025, Rajkumar embraced “Soara,” an emerging fashion brand that draws from its designers’ South Asian heritage while fusing American and Indian influences.

In a symbolic gesture, the Assemblywoman named her dress Rajkumari – meaning “princess” in Hindi – to highlight her dedication to public service and the vibrancy of New York’s Indian American community.

Much like Rajkumar, Soara’s co-founder Surya Garg is the daughter of Indian American immigrants. The Assemblywoman’s participation underscored the cultural and generational connections that continue to shape the city’s civic and creative landscapes.

Hundreds of attendees applauded as Rajkumar walked the runway in Soara’s colorful design.

“I walk the runway every day on the streets of New York, and this week I did it on a bigger stage,” Rajkumar said. “Just as fashion is about expressing identity and confidence, my role in public service is about empowering every New Yorker to stand tall and proud. My goal is a state where everyone walks a wide-open runway to opportunity.”

“Style Across the Aisle” has become a highlight of New York Fashion Week, showcasing local designers through models drawn from New York’s political elite across party lines. The event celebrates small businesses, cultural diversity, and community, while raising more than $75,000 for charitable causes.
