King Charles III presented President Donald Trump with a ceremonial bell from a World War II-era British submarine — known as HMS Trump — during a state dinner at the White House on Tuesday, in a gesture steeped in wartime history and symbolism.

The polished brass bell, engraved with Trump’s name and the year 1944, dates back to a submarine that left a UK shipyard during WWII and went on to serve in the Pacific theatre. Charles described the vessel as having played a “critical role” in that campaign, offering the bell as a personal gift, reports New York Post.

“May it stand as a testimony to our nation’s shared history and shining future,” the King said, striking a tone that blended tradition with forward-looking diplomacy.

The presentation took place during a formal white-tie dinner hosted by First Lady Melania Trump, attended by senior administration figures, members of Congress, Supreme Court justices, business leaders, media personalities and members of the president’s family.

In his toast, Charles reflected on the long and often complex relationship between Britain and the United States, describing it as a journey “from adversaries to the closest of allies, not always perhaps following the straightest path.” He added, with a touch of humor, “And should you ever need to get hold of us, well, just give us a ring.”

The King also spoke of the shared sacrifices of both nations, noting that their people had “fought and fallen together” and continued to stand side by side in the face of global challenges.

Trump, speaking from the head table, echoed that sense of partnership, calling the US-UK relationship a uniquely powerful alliance. He also touched on current events, referring to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and asserting that both leaders concurred on preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

“History has known no more powerful force than the combination of American patriotism and British pride,” Trump said, toasting Washington-London ties.
