India delivered a commanding 7-1 victory over Pakistan in the FIH Pro League in London on June 26, securing its fourth win of the campaign and completing a second consecutive victory over its archrivals.
The result lifted India to seventh place in the standings, moving ahead of Spain. India now has 17 points, one more than Spain’s 16 from 15 matches. India will conclude its Pro League campaign against England on June 28.
Seven different Indian players found the scoresheet. Sukhjeet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Jugraj Singh, Abhishek, Raj Kumar Pal, and Dilpreet Singh each scored once, while Abu Mahmood netted Pakistan’s only goal.
Pakistan remained without a point after 15 matches and is on course for relegation to the FIH Nations Cup.
After suffering a narrow 4-3 defeat to India in their previous meeting, Pakistan started aggressively and took the lead late in the opening quarter. Abu Mahmood converted a penalty corner in the 13th minute to put his side ahead.
India responded strongly at the start of the second quarter. Sukhjeet Singh equalized five minutes into the period with a well-taken finish that beat the Pakistani defense.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh then gave India the lead in the 27th minute, converting a drag flick from India’s fifth penalty corner of the match. India carried a 2-1 advantage into halftime.
The third quarter belonged entirely to India. Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke in the 34th minute to make it 3-1 after Indian forwards were fouled inside the circle.
A minute later, drag flick specialist Jugraj Singh extended the lead to 4-1 with a clinical finish. Abhishek produced one of the standout moments of the match, scoring in the 41st minute to make it 5-1 before Raj Kumar Pal added India’s sixth goal before the end of the quarter.
Dilpreet Singh, who scored both of India’s goals in the 2-2 draw against England a day earlier, completed the rout with a well-taken goal in the 54th minute, sealing a comprehensive 7-1 victory.
