GOPIO Announces Mumbai Convention, Opens Nominations for Diaspora Awards

The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) will hold its 2026 Biennial Convention and Conference from December 18 to 20 at the National Sports Club of India in Mumbai, India.

According to a GOPIO statement, the three-day event will bring together diaspora leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, academics, scientists, young achievers, and community representatives from around the world. Participants will discuss opportunities for collaboration and ways to strengthen ties between India and its global diaspora.

The convention’s theme, “VIKASANA – Diaspora for Developed India,” focuses on the diaspora’s role in supporting India’s development, the organization said.

Conference sessions will examine opportunities to connect diaspora expertise and investment with India’s technology and entrepreneurial sectors. Topics will include emerging technologies, science, investment, startups, mentorship, and business incubation.

A parallel set of sessions will address cooperation between nonresident Indians (NRIs) and People of Indian Origin (PIOs), the contributions of diaspora women across sectors, and the achievements of young diaspora members. The program will also feature a GOPIO Academic Council roundtable and a discussion on aging among diaspora seniors.

GOPIO said the conference aims to facilitate dialogue, knowledge sharing, and partnerships among participants based in India and abroad. Prospective speakers and panelists may contact gopio@optonline.net to express interest in participating.

The organization has also invited nominations for its awards, which will be presented at a banquet on the evening of December 19. The awards will recognize NRIs and PIOs for professional achievement, innovation, leadership, and service.

Award categories cover science and engineering, technology and innovation, medicine and health care, law, business and entrepreneurship, arts and literature, performing arts, public service, and entertainment. GOPIO will also honor individuals for their contributions to community service.

Nominations must include a brief biography outlining the nominee’s principal achievements, honors and awards, community or public service, and complete contact information.
