The India Association of Greater Boston (IAGB) reported increased participation in its cultural events, new community programs and several state honors at its annual general body meeting on September 12 at the Belmont Public Library.
President Nilesh Agrawal presented a review of the organization’s activities from October 2025 through September 2026. Founded in 1962, IAGB is among New England’s longest-standing Indian American organizations.
For the first time in its history, IAGB received a proclamation from Massachusetts Gov. Maura T. Healey recognizing January 26, 2026, as Republic Day in the state. The organization also received an annual India Day proclamation, a State Senate citation from Sen. Jamie Eldridge and a Community Excellence Award from the India International Film Festival of Boston. It received two grants, including its first AAPI Commission Small Grant Award.
IAGB said more than 2,500 people attended its Republic Day celebration on January 24 at Burlington High School. The event featured more than 250 performers and 150 competitors across eight categories. Girish Mehta received the Community Champion Award.
The organization’s India Day celebration on August 15 at NARA Park Amphitheater in Acton drew more than 4,000 attendees, according to IAGB. More than 200 performers took part. Guests included Raghuram Sastry, India’s consul general in Boston, and Bank of America executive Anu Chitrapu.
During the year, IAGB introduced tennis ball cricket tournaments for women and men, won by Warrior 1 and Desi Boys, respectively. It also held a youth 3D printing workshop with IIT AGNE and continued programs for seniors, including its Discover India series and Senior Expo. Its annual 5K walk and run supported Ekal Vidyalaya and Vision-Aid.
IAGB reported new partnerships with the India Conference at Harvard, AAPI Night at Gillette Stadium, GBH’s AANHPI Heritage Celebration and the International Day of Yoga hosted by the Consulate General of India in Boston.
Through its quarterly giving events, the organization said it donated more than 3,000 pounds of food to the Burlington Food Pantry and more than 200 bags of clothing benefiting Vision-Aid Boston. It also participated in more than 20 community events across New England and held flag-raising ceremonies in six Massachusetts communities to mark India’s Independence Day.
Agrawal thanked the organization’s sponsors, media partners and more than 100 volunteers for their support.
“Thank you for your trust and support,” he said. “It has been an honor to lead our community through a year of growth, recognition, and meaningful connection, and I look forward to building an even stronger future together.”
