The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) hosted its 2026 Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly from July 2 to 5 at the JW Marriott and Tampa Marriott Water Street in Tampa, Florida. According to AAPI, the gathering brought together physicians, researchers, healthcare leaders, and community members for four days focused on medical education, leadership, culture, and service.

Outgoing AAPI President Dr. Amit Chakrabarty emphasized the significance of the event, saying, “This is the convention — the one and only official AAPI Annual Convention & Scientific Assembly, recognized, sanctioned, and powered by the full strength of our national organization. Accept no imitations, no look-alikes, and no unofficial events.”

The convention also marked a leadership transition. Dr. Vijay Maurya assumed office as Chairman of the AAPI Board of Trustees alongside newly elected board members. Speaking about the board’s responsibilities, he said, “As BOT, our duty is to manage funds conservatively,” highlighting the organization’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

Dr. Meher Medavaram, who assumed office as AAPI President on July 4, outlined her priorities for the organization. “My vision is to lead AAPI with unity, integrity, inclusion, and purpose,” she said.

Reflecting on the convention, she added, “Tampa 2026 is the real stage, the real celebration. Our community deserves the best, and this year we are delivering a convention that sets a new benchmark for excellence, unity, and celebration.”

Outgoing Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Hetal Gor reviewed the board’s accomplishments during her tenure, with a particular focus on strengthening AAPI’s financial position. During a special reception, AAPI leaders recognized her service and leadership.

The convention featured an extensive scientific program with continuing medical education sessions covering Lifestyle Medicine, Primary Care, Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, Cardiology, Substance Abuse, and the Human Microbiome. Young physicians led several presentations, while Medical Student, Resident and Fellow (MSRF) scholars showcased their research.

Healthcare companies also participated through exhibits and product theaters. Describing the venue, Dr. Chakrabarty said, “These world-class venues will provide a dynamic and elegant setting to host scientific sessions, CME programs, product theaters, business networking events, and cultural showcases.”

Alongside its academic sessions, the convention incorporated spiritual and wellness programs. The opening ceremony included an invocation and bhajans by Dr. Aarti Pandya. Keynote addresses by Didi Krishna of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission and Siddhguru Sri Sidheshwar Brahmrishi Guruvar focused on compassion, wellness, mindfulness, and service. Daily Heartfulness meditation sessions were also held throughout the convention.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor presented the Keys to the City of Tampa to Nita Ambani and Dr. Chakrabarty on behalf of AAPI. She also proclaimed July 2 and every day of the July 4 weekend as AAPI Day in Tampa.

“It was an honor for me and for our city to have Ms. Ambani in our community. Her speech, her words were so inspiring, and I think everyone that was there walked away with a new level of inspiration,” Castor said.

Convention Chair Dr. Sagar Galwankar thanked the volunteers and AAPI members who helped organize the event.

“AAPI conventions have always been a celebration of our heritage and our achievements. But this year, we are raising the bar,” he said.

Convention Convener Dr. Raghu Juvvadi described the gathering as both a professional and cultural experience. “Join us for the experience of a lifetime at the AAPI Annual Convention in Tampa. Let us pamper you with mouthwatering, exotic cuisine and unforgettable experiences,” he said.

He added, “As the Tampa convention approaches, it stands as more than an event — it is a celebration of our identity, our achievements, and our unity.”

Among the featured speakers was tennis star Sania Mirza, who encouraged women to believe in themselves. “We as women have enough people telling us what we can’t do — we should be the people telling ourselves that we can,” she said.

Actor Vivek Oberoi also addressed attendees, sharing his experiences working in rural India and supporting women’s empowerment.

The convention included a CEO Forum, bringing together healthcare executives and industry leaders to discuss innovation, healthcare policy, and the future of medical care. A ceremonial Presidential Gavel Exchange marked the transition of leadership within the organization.

Leadership meetings involving the Executive Committee, Board of Trustees, and Governing Body focused on AAPI’s governance and strategic direction.

President-Elect Dr. Krishen Kumar described the convention as “the complete experience — premium access, signature events, cultural showcases, scientific sessions, and entertainment that defines the AAPI legacy.”

Dr. Sreeni Gangasani, President-Elect of AAPI, said, “We have delivered every single time, beyond expectations — and the truth is simple: Dr. Chakrabarty has delivered beyond expectations.”

Secretary Dr. Soumya Neravetla highlighted the participation of younger physicians. “The YPS/MSRF community infused the convention with youthful energy through mixers, talent showcases, and a signature cruise night that blended networking with celebration,” she said.

Treasurer Dr. Raghu Lolabhat reflected on the broader significance of the annual gathering. “AAPI conventions are not just events — they are expressions of who we are as a community. AAPICON 2026 showcased our unity, our heritage, and our collective strength,” he said.

The Women’s Forum, chaired by Dr. Kavita Jyotula, featured discussions on leadership, equity, and professional advancement for women physicians.

Evening cultural programs included performances by Kumar Sanu, music duo Vishal-Shekhar, Dr. Aarti Pandya, DJ Yatin, AM, and 11-year-old singer Pranysqa Mishra. Additional events included stand-up comedy by Nimesh Patel, Bollywood-themed programs, fashion shows, Zumba sessions, and AAPI’s Got Talent competition.

A major highlight of the convention was the presentation of the AAPI Humanitarian Award to Nita Ambani in recognition of her philanthropic work in healthcare, education, and community development.

Keynote speaker Dr. Achyuta Samanta praised AAPI’s contributions, saying, “AAPI stands as a powerful symbol of professional excellence, global leadership and dedicated service to humanity.”

He added, “AAPI is a vital bridge between India and the United States… guided by the Indian philosophy of ‘vasudhaiva kutumbakam’ — the world is one family.”

As the convention concluded, Dr. Chakrabarty thanked physicians, families, sponsors, and volunteers for their contributions. “This convention is truly your convention. Its success depends entirely on your presence, your energy, and your participation,” he said.

In his farewell remarks, he added, “Behind every physician, there is always a support system that sacrifices time, provides encouragement, and shares in both the challenges and successes of our profession. Leading this organization has been more than a role; it has been a calling… This farewell is tender, but powerful, because it comes from a place of having given everything.”
