Milpitas Marks International Yoga Day

More than 100 community members gathered at the Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center in Milpitas on June 21 to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026, embracing this year’s global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”

The event was organized by the Consulate General of India in San Francisco in collaboration with the Association of Indo Americans (AIA), the Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center, Silicon Valley, and several supporting community organizations. According to a statement, the celebration brought together participants of all ages and backgrounds to experience the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga and meditation.

Among those in attendance were Deputy Consul General of India Rakesh Adlakha, Milpitas Mayor Carmen Montano, Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan, Sister Kusum of the Brahma Kumaris, Milpitas Councilmember William Lam, Milpitas Planning Commissioner Dipak Awasty, Indian community advocate Ajay Bhutoria, former Saratoga Councilmember Rishi Kumar, Air India representative Bama Cariapa, Vandana Nair, Commercial Specialist at the U.S. Consulate General in Dubai, Atma Dayal Bhai, and other community members. Their participation reflected yoga’s growing popularity and acceptance across the Bay Area’s diverse communities.

The program featured a guided meditation session led by Sister Kusum and yoga demonstrations conducted by Manoj Joshi and Ambili Sudhakaran. The sessions were designed for both beginners and experienced practitioners, with participants engaging in activities that promoted “physical health, mental well-being, mindfulness, and healthy ageing.”

As a co-hosting organization, AIA reaffirmed its commitment to advancing wellness, cultural understanding, and community engagement through initiatives that bring people together.

Community leaders said yoga has evolved beyond a form of physical exercise into a global movement that promotes holistic health, inner peace, and harmony. According to the statement, the event also underscored yoga’s enduring role in fostering healthier lifestyles and stronger communities.
