The FIFA World Cup 2026 got underway with a dramatic opening match as co-host Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in Mexico City, in a contest overshadowed by three red cards, including two issued to the losing side.

The tournament officially opened following a colorful ceremony at the iconic Estadio Azteca, where Mexico celebrated a convincing victory in the first match of what is being billed as the largest FIFA World Cup in history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches.

Mexico controlled much of the game, enjoying 60 percent possession and registering 16 shots compared to South Africa’s three. The hosts could have added to their tally but ultimately settled for a comfortable two-goal win in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

South Africa struggled to create meaningful chances and appeared unsettled defensively throughout the match. Their task became significantly more difficult when defender Sphephelo S’Miso Sithole was shown a red card after bringing down Mexico’s Brian Gutiérrez as he advanced toward goal. Although the foul occurred just outside the penalty area, sparing South Africa from conceding a penalty, the team was left to play nearly 40 minutes with 10 men.

Mexico eventually capitalized on the numerical advantage when Raúl Jiménez broke free from his markers and headed home a cross from Roberto Alvarado to give the hosts the lead. The goal further tightened Mexico’s grip on the contest as South Africa focused primarily on limiting additional damage.

South Africa’s hopes of a comeback effectively ended when Themba Zwane received a second red card following a VAR review. While the challenge on Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado initially appeared routine, the referee reviewed the incident and determined that Zwane had made contact with Alvarado’s face, reducing the visitors to nine men.

Mexico maintained control for the remainder of the match, while South Africa found little success in attack. Their frustrations were compounded late in the game when Mexico’s César Montes was also shown a red card after stopping a promising run by South Africa’s Khuliso Mudau. The dismissal briefly offered South Africa an opportunity from a free kick just outside the penalty area, but the chance went unconverted.

Despite the late setback, Mexico comfortably closed out the victory to make an ideal start to its World Cup campaign. The hosts will next face South Korea on Thursday, while South Africa will look to regroup ahead of its match against Czechia the same day.

Meanwhile, attention now turns to fellow co-host Canada, which will open its campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on Friday at 3 p.m. ET. Canadian supporters gathered at official fan zones in Toronto and Vancouver ahead of the team’s opening match, although Toronto’s fan zone was later closed because of severe weather.

Canada is seeking its first-ever FIFA World Cup victory, and head coach Jesse Marsch expressed confidence that weather conditions would not affect his team’s preparations as it aims to begin the tournament on a positive note against a challenging Bosnian side.
