Under clear skies and warm spring weather, hundreds from across the DMV region gathered at ISKCON of DC on May 16, in Potomac, Maryland, to celebrate Holi, the beloved Festival of Colors, in what has become one of the area’s most cherished community traditions.

Widely regarded as a pioneer of public Holi celebrations in the region, Holi at ISKCON of DC once again drew a diverse crowd of families, students, professionals, and community members eager to join in the joyful festivities. Participants spent the day throwing colors, dancing, enjoying music, and celebrating together in an atmosphere of unity and happiness, according to a statement from the organizers.

This year’s celebration was organized by the Youth Wing of ISKCON, whose efforts transformed the grounds into a lively family festival. Picnic mats spread beneath shaded tents gave families space to relax, while a live DJ kept the energy high throughout the day with upbeat music and festive rhythms.

“Organizing this event was a team effort, and the success can truly be attributed to all of the co-organizers, volunteers, and performers who came together to make it happen,” said lead organizer Akhil.

Adding to the celebratory spirit, Andrew Friedson stopped by to participate in the festivities and greet attendees. Montgomery County Executive Mark Elrich also recognized the occasion by sending a proclamation through his representatives honoring the event and its contribution to the local community.

Food was another major attraction of the festival. Govinda’s, the restaurant of ISKCON, served an extensive menu featuring dosa counters, chole bhature, pani puris, and a variety of traditional Indian delicacies. Additional food stalls offered festivalgoers a selection of snacks and refreshments throughout the day.

Saci Suta Das Manager of Govindas restaurant said, “The dosa varieties were a huge hit with the community, especially because it was a live counter.”

Temple President Ananda Vrindavan reflected on the deeper spirit of the festival. “Holi is a fun festival for families to connect,” she said. “The minute one gets colors on them, everyone loses inhibitions. Just as all are equal before Krishna, it’s the same feeling when one plays with colors.”

The celebration once again highlighted Holi’s enduring message of joy, equality, friendship, and community spirit; values that continue to make the festival one of the most anticipated cultural gatherings in the Washington metropolitan area.
