Web Review: Maamla Legal Hai S2 Improves Upon Its Original

Some series, we obviously know, will go on for future seasons. And the best part? They do not need cliffhangers in the way their story unfolds. Correction: stories unfold. A slim red thread of continuity underlines the various narratives of this dramedy around courts, quirks of law and advocates.

The series features the now-beloved characters of V.D. Tyagi (Ravi Kissen), now a judge, and his coterie of friends, advocate Sujata Negi (Nidhi Bisht), court manager Vishwas Pandey (Anant Vijay Joshi), the rich lawyer who drives a Mercedes—Ananya Shroff (Naila Grrewal), advocate Balli a.k.a. Mintu (Anjum Batra), and two characters (no better word to describe them!) named Law (Amit Vikram Pandey) and Order (Vikram).

The older names also include judges Ghosh (Bishwanath Bhattacharya) and Sunil (Vijayant Kohli) along with Munshiji (Vijay Rajoria), PP Sahab (Brijendra Kala), Shambhoo (Kumar Saurabh) and Judge Bainsla (Tanvi Azmi). The newer additions are Judge Shubkela (Dibyendu Bhattacharya), the smug Nayana Arora (Kusha Kapila) and the judge’s personal assistant Topo (R. Badree).

The plots are ingeniously coined for each episode based on unfortunate real incidents that are seen in courts, shown in the district of Patparganj in North India. And so, apart from the very fascinating characters above, we see cases (and comic chaos) with even more interesting, amusing and even bizarre people like Banaspati (Bhojpuri superstar Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’) whose armpits get burnt after spraying a dubious deodorant, and another client whose housemaid is willing to donate her kidney to his ailing mother, seemingly without any compensation!

Then of course there are the rivalries and politics among the advocates, a mutual dislike between the two girls Ananya and Naina, Mintu’s romantic peccadillos, and the phone number of a wanted man tracked to the court premises. And much more.

Of course, we also have the main character of Tyagi going through his first dilemma of choosing between death penalty and life imprisonment for a mere 24-year-old for double murder.

The last episode ends the season on a high as Tyagi’s decision reaches flashpoint and several other cases go in for a triumphant conclusion as Balli and Negi finally decide on naming their newly acquired joint chamber as counsel in a specific way.

Sharply written, with dialogues that are perceptive and yet humorous, the series outclasses Season 1 and there is barely anything negative to speak of the performances of Ravi Kissen and his entire ensemble as well as of Nirahua and other clients are just fabulous. Dinesh Lala Yadav ‘Nirahua,’ Pooja Shyam Prabhat as Vishwas’ fiery and jealous girlfriend and Sudhir Sangwan as the cop Pepsu stand tallest among the new entries. Rahul Pandey’s direction as well as the script are nothing short of brilliant and the show is a must-watch in every way and for everyone.

Rating: ****1/2
