NCAIA and DMV community organizations celebrate 78th Indian Independence Day celebrations in Virginia

Ashburn, Virginia: The National Council of Asian Indian Associations (NCAIA), in collaboration with other community organizations in the DMV area, hosted the 78th India Independence Day celebrations on August 17, 2024, at Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Virginia.

The event commenced with a devotional kirtan by members of the ISKCON Potomac. 

The Chief Guest, Prof. Panjab Singh, chancellor of Rani Laxmi Bai Central Agricultural University, shared his joy in participating and expressed pride in India’s achievements.

“I have been visiting this country since 1967, and each time I interact with people here, I feel a deep sense of pride. I am especially proud of the Indians who excel in fields such as IT, healthcare, science, and industry. Their contributions are truly invaluable,” remarked Prof. Singh.

Virginia State Senator Suhas Subramanyam, who won the Democratic primary on June 18th, and will contest against Republican candidate Mike Clancy for the US House in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District on the November 5th general election, shared his personal connection to Independence Day. He noted that his grandfather, who served in the Indian Army, had taught him much about India’s independence and its peaceful struggle for freedom. 

Senator Subramanyam also emphasized the ongoing strong relationship between India and the United States and the mutual benefits of continued cooperation.

Virginia State Delegate Kannan Srinivasan reflected on his experiences since moving to Virginia in 1999, noting the growth and success of the Indian community. “There is no limit to our potential as we continue to grow and achieve together,” he shared.

NCAIA Chairman Trustee Sunil Singh highlighted India’s remarkable progress since independence and the significant role Indian Americans play in the United States. He emphasized that India’s development is strongly supported by their contributions.

NCAIA Chairman Kripa Singh remarked, “This day reminds us of the bravery of those who fought for India’s freedom and the deep ties Indian Americans maintain with India and the United States.”

On the occasion, Senator Tim Kaine’s message was delivered by former Virginia Advisory Board Member G.D. Madhusudan, while Senator Mark Warner’s message was read by his Northern Virginia Regional Director, Tannia Talento. Harold Pyon, a representative of the Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, delivered the AG’s message.

Other notable speakers at the event included Virginia State Senator, Saddam Salim, former Director General of Police, Bihar, Gupteshwar Pandey, and NCAIA’s Event Coordinator Promila Gupta. The event featured a variety of cultural performances, with NCAIA’s Cultural Chair Meenal Singh serving as the emcee.

During the occasion, NCAIA’s Distinguished Service Awards were presented by NCAIA Board Members to Sirmukh Manku, Atul Kumar, Sant Gupta, Krishna Gudupati, the Mere Apne Seniors program of Durga Temple, and the Sada Bahaar Seniors program of Rajdhani Mandir.

Before the event, the Marathi Kala Mandal of Greater Washington led a vibrant parade, followed by organizations including NCAIA, ISKCON Potomac, Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, Sewa International, and JKYog.
