Vimal Kumar Kolappa has been appointed to the North Carolina-India Trade Commission, which works to strengthen trade and economic ties between North Carolina and India. His three-year term will begin Oct. 1, 2026.
A statement announcing the appointment described Kolappa as an entrepreneur, philanthropist and public servant whose decades of leadership have had a significant impact on North Carolina.
“Through visionary business leadership, unwavering commitment to public service, and extraordinary dedication to community advancement, he has exemplified the values of integrity, service, and excellence that the Order of the Long Leaf Pine was established to recognize,” the statement said.
Originally from India, Kolappa now lives in Chocowinity, North Carolina. The statement said he has dedicated his career to strengthening the state’s economy while “enriching the lives of its citizens.” It described his path from immigrant entrepreneur to business and civic leader as reflecting the “spirit of opportunity and service” associated with North Carolina.
Kolappa has developed a hospitality enterprise with properties across the southeastern United States. He currently owns and operates 22 hospitality properties affiliated with internationally recognized brands, including Hilton, Marriott, IHG and Choice Hotels, across North Carolina, Virginia, Florida and Ohio. He also owns restaurant businesses in Virginia.
“Under his leadership, these enterprises have grown into an organization with the group’s combined assets exceeding $1 billion, generating substantial economic activity throughout the region,” the statement said. “His businesses currently employ more than 550 people, with ongoing development projects expected to create an additional 150 jobs, many in rural North Carolina communities where economic opportunities are especially valuable.”
According to the statement, Kolappa has also maintained a commitment to “workforce development, responsible corporate stewardship, operational excellence, and long-term investment” in North Carolina’s economy. His business activities have contributed to “tourism, local tax revenues, economic development, and job creation” across the state.
Kolappa’s business experience and civic leadership have led to appointments by multiple North Carolina governors to several state boards and commissions.
