Residents of Forenza, Italy, commemorated the town’s liberation on August 11, honoring the Sikh soldiers who fought as part of the Allied forces during World War II and contributed to its liberation in 1944.
Sikh soldiers serving with the Allied forces fought German Wehrmacht troops and Italian forces aligned with the Italian Social Republic during the campaign. Their courage and sacrifice continue to be remembered in Forenza, where a memorial was established in their honor.
The memorial features a wall inscribed with the names of Sikh soldiers. Since its establishment about a decade ago, members of the World Sikh Shaheed Military, a registered organization in Italy, have organized an annual “Shaheedi Divas” at the site to commemorate the soldiers who lost their lives.
Forenza is a historic town and commune in the province of Potenza in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. Situated on a hill overlooking the Bradano Valley, it is known as the “Balcony of Puglia” for its expansive views. The town traces its history to Forentum, an ancient Samnite settlement later conquered by the Romans.
According to Prithipal Singh, President of the World Sikh Shaheed Military, the 10th Shaheedi Divas this year drew significant participation from members of Italy’s Sikh community as well as local Italians who continue to remember the sacrifices made by Sikh soldiers.
Local residents have continued to express their appreciation for Sikh soldiers who traveled far from their homeland to serve with the Allied forces and fought in the campaign in Italy.
Providing details of the Shaheedi Divas observance, Prithipal Singh said the program began with the recitation of Sri Sukhmani Sahib. Two girls, Ishu and Noor Kaur, then recited slokas from Gurbani before Bhai Bhupinder Singh performed the Ardas.
Participants subsequently proceeded to the memorial wall, where wreaths were laid in tribute to the fallen soldiers. Among those who paid floral tributes were Prithipal Singh, Satnam Singh, Jasvir Singh, Iqbal Singh, Ravinder Singh Bhau and Bhupinder Singh Kang, followed by Forenza Mayor Vice Sinke. The mayor praised the sacrifices of the Sikh soldiers and commended their courage and dedication.
Representatives of the Sikh community were joined by officials from the Forenza commune, serving and retired military personnel, civic authorities, members of the Italian police and Carabinieri, and freedom fighters in paying tribute to the Sikh soldiers.
Local authorities also organized a separate event marking Forenza’s 82nd Liberation Day and invited representatives of the World Sikh Shaheed Military. Those attending included Prithpal Singh, Satnam Singh, Iqbal Singh Sodhi, Javir Singh Dhanauta, Ravinder Singh Bhau and Bhupinder Singh Kang, President of the Parma Gurughar.
At the official event, the mayor praised the role of Sikh soldiers, noting that they demonstrated exemplary courage while fighting hundreds of miles from their homeland for a country that was not their own. The mayor also highlighted their commitment to the military tradition of fighting for a cause.
A community kitchen, or langar, was organized for participants following the commemorative events.
