Italy Honors Sikh Soldiers Who Fell During World War II

Rich floral tributes were paid to Sikh soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the Second World War in the campaign to liberate Italy from German occupation. The commemorative event brought together mayors from nearly 20 communes, senior defense officials, freedom fighters, civic and administrative leaders, and hundreds of members of Italy’s Sikh community.

According to Prithipal Singh, President of the World Sikh Shaheed Military, Italy, the memorial ceremony was held in the city of Forlì to commemorate the anniversary of Italy’s liberation during World War II.

The program began with the recitation of Sri Sukhmani Sahib from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib by members of the Gurdwara Forlì congregation. The religious observance also included the recitation of slokas, kirtan, and other Sikh rituals, including the Ardas.

Following the religious ceremonies, serving and retired Italian defense personnel, freedom fighters, and senior civic officials joined the commemorative event. On behalf of the World Sikh Shaheed Military, floral tributes were offered by Prithipal Singh, Satnam Singh, Jasbir Singh Dhanauta, Iqbal Singh, Karamjit Singh, President of Gurdwara Lene, Inderjit Singh Kala, and Ravinder Singh Bhau. The group placed wreaths at the memorial, where the names and images of Sikh soldiers are displayed on a commemorative wall.

Devotional songs honoring the martyrs were then played in tribute to their sacrifice.

At the site where many Sikh soldiers lost their lives during World War II, a memorial wall bearing the names of numerous Sikh servicemen stands in their honor. A local Catholic priest from Forlì offered prayers at the war memorial, followed by the recitation of the Sikh Ardas by Barjinder Singh.

The Mayor of Forlì, along with the mayors of nearly 20 other communes, also laid floral tributes at the memorial.

Observed as War Memorial Day, the event drew members of the Sikh community from across Italy, many of whom traveled with the Sri Guru Granth Sahib to participate in the commemorations.

Participants arrived from Sikh gurdwaras and communities in San Giovanni, Parma, Ancona (Guru Nanak Mission Marche), Rome, Pontinia, Vicenza, Leno, and other parts of Italy. Representatives of the respective gurdwara committees joined the ceremony to honor Sikh soldiers who gave their lives while fighting far from their homeland.

Senior representatives of the Indian diplomatic mission in Milan also attended the ceremony and paid tribute to the Sikh soldiers.

The event was attended by the mayors of Forlì and several neighboring communes, along with Italian freedom fighters, veterans, civic leaders, and members of the public.

In addition to the community kitchen (langar), volunteers organized stalls serving sweetened water and fresh fruit to those attending the memorial.

Satnam Singh, Secretary of the organizing committee, thanked participants who had traveled from across Italy to attend the commemorative event and honor the sacrifice of Sikh soldiers who upheld a distinguished military tradition.
