Air India will begin operating non-stop flights between Delhi and Toronto from Aug. 1 using its newly inducted Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, eliminating the current fuel stop in Vienna and reducing travel time by nearly three hours, the airline said on Thursday.
The move marks a significant upgrade on one of Air India’s most important long-haul international routes, serving Canada’s large Indian diaspora. The airline will also restore daily operations on the route from Aug. 1, up from the current five weekly flights after temporarily reducing frequencies in June and July due to elevated fuel prices and geopolitical disruptions that affected flight operations.
The removal of the Vienna fuel stop remains subject to the availability of international airspace, Air India said. The Delhi-Toronto flight time is expected to fall from around 20 hours, including the refueling halt, to about 17 hours. The return Toronto-Delhi service will continue to operate non-stop, with a flying time of up to 16 hours.
The route will be operated by Air India’s factory-fresh Boeing 787-9 aircraft, configured in a three-class layout with Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy cabins. The deployment also marks the debut of Air India’s latest long-haul cabin product in the Canadian market.
“Canada is home to one of the world’s largest and most vibrant Indian diaspora communities, and Toronto has long been one of Air India’s most important international gateways,” Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said.
He said the introduction of the airline’s newest Boeing 787-9 aircraft reflects Air India’s ongoing fleet renewal and product transformation strategy while expanding its premium offering across North America.
The aircraft is equipped with 30 Business Class suites featuring fully flat beds and direct aisle access, 28 Premium Economy seats, and 238 Economy seats. Passengers will also have access to upgraded in-flight entertainment with more than 3,000 hours of content, Bluetooth audio connectivity, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, mood lighting inspired by Indian wellness traditions, and refreshed onboard dining and amenity offerings.
The introduction of Premium Economy on the Delhi-Toronto route is a first for Air India, providing an intermediate cabin option for passengers travelling on the ultra-long-haul sector.
Flights are available for booking through Air India’s website, mobile app, contact center and travel agents worldwide.
Under the revised schedule effective Aug. 1, Flight AI187 will depart Delhi at 1:45 a.m. and arrive in Toronto at 9:30 a.m. local time. The return service, AI188, will leave Toronto at 12:30 p.m. and arrive in Delhi at 2:05 p.m. the following day.
