Senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar, who previously served as Minister (Personnel & Community Affairs) at the Embassy of India in Washington D.C., has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police.

Kumar succeeded Satish Golcha, who has been heading the force since August 2025.

According to an order issued by the union Ministry of Home Affairs, Kumar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, will assume charge with immediate effect from the date he takes over the post and will continue until further orders.

Before his appointment, Kumar was serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. With more than three decades of experience in policing, intelligence, and strategic security, he is regarded as one of the senior-most officers of the AGMUT cadre. He served at the Embassy in Washington DC from January 2018 to September 2021.

During his distinguished career, Kumar has been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service as well as the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.

The Home Ministry’s order also directed the outgoing Delhi Police Commissioner, Golcha, to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for further posting after Anurag Kumar assumes charge.

Kumar takes over at a time when the Delhi Police faces multiple challenges, including maintaining law and order in the national capital, strengthening cybercrime investigations, enhancing urban policing, and coordinating security arrangements for high-profile national and international events.
