The United States became the second team after co-host Mexico to secure a place in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, following a 2-0 victory over Australia. The win marked the Americans’ second consecutive triumph in as many matches.
Mexico had earlier become the first team to advance to the knockout stage after recording victories over South Africa and Korea in its opening two matches.
Notably, all three co-host nations remain unbeaten after the second round of group-stage fixtures. While the United States and Mexico have each registered two wins from two matches, Canada has collected four points from a win and a draw.
Canada is also on the verge of qualifying for the Round of 32. The co-hosts currently top their group with four points and will look to seal progression when they face Switzerland in their final group-stage match.
Switzerland is level with Canada on four points but sits second in the standings due to an inferior goal tally. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar are the other teams in the group.
Against Australia, the United States enjoyed a start similar to its opening match against Paraguay. In that game, an own goal had handed the hosts an early advantage. A similar scenario unfolded once again as Australia defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently turned a pass from Folarin Balogun into his own net, giving the United States the lead.
The Americans doubled their advantage through Alex Freeman, who headed home after a deflected effort from Sergiño Dest, securing all three points and confirming the United States’ place in the next round.
