Indian American Impact has announced what it described as a series of “historic victories” and “runoff advances” for its endorsed candidates across Georgia following the state’s May 19 primary elections.

According to a statement from IA Impact, the election outcomes reflect the growing political influence of Indian American and South Asian American communities in Georgia, which is home to more than 600,000 Asian American residents.

“Last night’s results in Georgia speak to the growing political power and representation of our communities. We are thrilled to see so many South Asian leaders stepping into the halls of power and ensuring our communities have a voice at every level of government,” Executive Director of Indian American Impact, Chintan Patel, said in the statement.

Patel added that the endorsed candidates would work to lower costs for working families, protect fundamental freedoms, and defend immigrant communities against what he described as MAGA extremism.

“Indian American Impact is proud to stand alongside them as we continue building a more inclusive and representative democracy in Georgia and across the country,” he added.

Candidates advancing to runoff elections include Nabilah Parkes for lieutenant governor and Rahul Garabadu for Georgia State Senate District 7.

Parkes advanced to a runoff in the lieutenant governor race and could become the first South Asian and Asian American lieutenant governor nominee from any political party in Georgia history. Garabadu also advanced to a runoff in a closely contested state senate race.

Among those who secured primary victories were:

  • Jyot Singh, who won the State House District 97 primary and is positioned to become the first Sikh elected official in Georgia history.
  • Saira Draper, who won a competitive primary election for State Senate District 44.
  • Akbar Ali, who secured the Democratic nomination for House District 106 and will continue serving as the youngest state legislator in Georgia.
