The Sikhs of America Inc., USA hosted its 2026 Annual Vaisakhi Gala and Sikh Hero Awards Night on May 17 at The Gathering Place, in Maryland, bringing together community leaders and members of the South Asian diaspora for an evening centered on service, unity, and community recognition.

Welcoming attendees, Chairman of Sikhs of America, Jesse Singh described the gathering as a “very humbling experience” and reflected on the Sikh community’s contributions to the United States as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.

A video presentation shown during the event highlighted the history and contributions of Sikh Americans across the country.

“For more than a century, Sikh Americans have been a vibrant thread in this great nation’s story. From the vast farmlands of America to serving proudly on the front lines, our roots run deep within the heart of this country built on faith, hard work, sacrifice, and service to humanity,” the presentation noted, adding that “Sikhs of America is more than an organization, it is a heartbeat of unity, culture, and service.”

Singh said the evening’s Hero’s Awards ceremony was intended to recognize individuals whose achievements and service have become an inspiration for younger generations within the community.

“I’m so proud and honored to have those Sikh heroes amongst us,” he said.

Introducing the honorees, Sukhpal Singh Dhanoa emphasized that the awards reflect appreciation from the broader Sikh community for individuals whose work often takes place away from public attention.

“This stage is dedicated to those extraordinary individuals who quietly uplift humanity without seeking applause. Those who serve the community when nobody is watching, those who protect Sikh values while contributing positively to society,” Dhanoa said.

He added that the honorees represented a range of fields, including public service, education, business, health care, and humanitarian work.

Dhanoa also recalled the response to the inaugural Sikh Hero Awards held last year, noting that many attendees described the initiative as “unique, and historic” because it encouraged members of the community to come together to “celebrate” one another rather than compete.

Among the 2026 Hero’s Awards recipients was Sardar Bahadur Singh, founder of One Beat Medical Group, who was recognized for his work in charitable health care, education, and community development initiatives across India. Organizers highlighted his efforts in establishing hospitals, eye care centers, and educational institutions focused on training future health care professionals.

JJ Singh, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing Loudoun County, was honored for his leadership and civic engagement. Organizers praised his efforts in promoting community participation in public life and encouraging future generations to engage in democracy and civic responsibility.

Organizers described him as a prominent Sikh voice advocating for equality, inclusion, and democratic values. MP Dhesi, who couldn’t attend in person delivered a video message.

Another honoree was Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, Minister of Minority Affairs for Pakistan’s Punjab, Member of Provincial Assembly. Organizers highlighted his role in advancing Sikh representation in public life and promoting religious tourism. Addressing attendees, Sajid Tarar, founder of Muslims of America, praised the event’s emphasis on interfaith and intercommunity engagement.

“The message of unity and service was strongly delivered,” Tarar said, noting that members of the broader South Asian diaspora, including Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, and Muslims of both Indian and Pakistani backgrounds, attended the celebration together.
