The Consulate General of India in Houston, in collaboration with The Center for Indian Classical Music of Houston and Vallabh Priti Seva Samaj Haveli, along with several diaspora organizations, will commemorate 150 years of Vande Mataram on March 7, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at VPSS Shree Nathji’s Haveli.

Composed in 1875 by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Vande Mataram became a spiritual and emotional anthem of India’s freedom movement and later attained recognition as India’s National Song, according to a statement from CGI Houston. “Its message of unity, cultural pride, and national awakening continues to inspire generations and resonates deeply with the vibrant Indo American community,” the statement noted.

The Consulate described the milestone event as a “collective celebration” of the Indo American community, bringing together organizations, community leaders, and members to reflect on “India’s rich cultural legacy and reaffirm the bonds that connect heritage, identity, and shared values.”

As part of the commemoration, the Consulate will present a curated exhibition titled “150 Years of Vande Mataram,” featuring “historical narratives, and artistic interpretations,” tracing the song’s evolution from its composition to its enduring national significance.

A dedicated Consular and Tourism Information Desk will also be available to provide guidance on consular services, travel to India, and various government initiatives.

“This outreach effort aims to strengthen community engagement and ensure that essential services and information are accessible to all,” the statement added, noting that the Consulate looks forward to marking the historic occasion with the community and reinforcing collective bonds through “shared pride, purpose, and cultural unity.”
