Canada has announced more than $2 million in humanitarian assistance to support emergency relief efforts in Sri Lanka following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

“The loss of life and devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah is heartbreaking. Canada stands in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka during this difficult time,” said Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development), while announcing the funding.

According to Sarai, the assistance includes $1.4 million for the World Food Programme to provide immediate food access for affected households; $350,000 to World Vision Canada, a member of the Humanitarian Coalition, to deliver relief supplies, emergency shelter, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services through the Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund; $215,000 to support the Sri Lanka Red Cross’s ongoing relief operations through the Emergency Disaster Assistance Fund administered by the Canadian Red Cross; and nearly $70,000 through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives to support local emergency relief efforts.

Canadian Minister for Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree also underscored Canada’s commitment to Sri Lanka in a statement, noting that “Cyclone Ditwah has caused unimaginable loss, leaving many families and communities in Sri Lanka facing devastation and uncertainty. Canada stands with those impacted and will continue to provide humanitarian aid and support to help communities recover and rebuild.”

In the 2024-25 fiscal year, Canada provided $8.1 million in bilateral development assistance to Sri Lanka.

Cyclone Ditwah triggered widespread flooding and landslides across the island, claiming lives and causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. The disaster has severely disrupted communities and local economies.

Canadian officials said the government continues to monitor the situation closely and remains in contact with experienced partners to assess evolving humanitarian needs. The current support is focused on providing immediate relief, with Canada committed to identifying additional ways to assist as recovery efforts progress.
