Virginia Democrats have officially selected their statewide candidates for the 2025 general election. In the June 17 primary, former U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger secured the party’s nomination for Governor, State Senator Ghazala Hashmi won the nomination for Lieutenant Governor, and Delegate Jay Jones clinched the nomination for Attorney General.
Following her victory, Senator Hashmi framed the moment as a pivotal one for Virginia’s future.

“Tonight, Virginians made history. We didn’t just win a primary, we sent a clear message that we won’t be bullied, broken, or dragged backward by the chaos in Washington,” Hashmi said in a statement. “I’m honored to stand alongside Abigail Spanberger, Jay Jones, and our Democratic ticket to fight for the future of this Commonwealth.”
Emphasizing the people-centered focus of her campaign, Hashmi cited working parents, families struggling with housing costs, and Virginians searching for strong leadership as central to her vision.
“I’ve spent my life pushing for fully funded public schools, defending reproductive rights, fighting to protect Medicaid, and taking on those who try to block progress,” she added. “I will stand on the front lines to protect Virginia from extremism, and I will lead the charge to build something better.”

She also extended gratitude to her supporters and campaign volunteers, noting their “dedication and passion” as the driving force behind her campaign. “I am ready to fight alongside you and win this November,” she said.
Democratic gubernatorial nominee Spanberger congratulated both Hashmi and Jones on their nominations, highlighting the unity of the ticket moving forward.
“From now until November, we are going to work hard to earn Virginians’ trust — and their votes — in this election as one united Democratic ticket,” Spanberger said.

Praising Hashmi’s legislative record, Spanberger described her as “a proven leader in the Virginia Senate” who has advanced policies that spur economic growth, improve schools, protect healthcare, and defend reproductive rights.
She also commended Jones’ legacy of public service.
“Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Delegate Jones has spent his life fighting for justice,” she said. “I know that as Attorney General, he’ll focus on keeping Virginians safe while protecting every Virginian’s rights and quality of life with the same fierce commitment to fairness and integrity that has defined his public service.”
