Indian Consulate and India’s UN Mission in New York celebrate India’s Independence Day

The Consulate General of India, and the Permanent Mission of India (PMI) to the United Nations celebrated India’s 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024, in New York. 

Consul General of India in New York, Binaya Pradhan, hoisted the tri-colored Indian flag amidst Indian community members who gathered at the consulate to participate in the celebrations.

India’s Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, who is visiting New York joined the celebration at the Consulate. 

Minister Margherita highlighted India’s “remarkable journey of nation-building,” since its independence in 1947, noting the substantial progress the country has achieved in areas such as education, health, and livelihoods in recent years. He also engaged with members of the Indian diaspora commending their contributions to India’s progress.

The Minister also participated in an event organized by the Federation of Indian Associations in NY-NJ-NE and hoisted the tri-color flag at the Times Square.

 Sibu Nair, deputy director of Asian American Affairs for New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, presented a citation declaring August 15th as India Independence Day in the New York State.

On the occasion, a group dance performance and patriotic songs by students of Indian classical music were also presented.

At PMI, Ambassador R. Ravindra, Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Permanent Representative hoisted the flag in the presence of diaspora members, Indian staff members working at the United Nations, and families and friends of the PMI staff.
