On April 4, 2024, the U.S. Senate confirmed Indian American attorney Harmeet Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice. The confirmation passed with a 52-45 vote.

Though the voting was along party lines, Republican Senator from Alaska, Lisa Murkowski was the only member to vote against Dhillon’s confirmation.

President Donald Trump, who nominated Dhillon, praised her long-standing commitment to civil liberties in a statement when nominating her.

“I am pleased to nominate Harmeet K. Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice,” he stated. “Throughout her career, Harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished Civil Liberties, including taking on Big Tech for censoring our Free Speech, representing Christians who were prevented from praying together during COVID, and suing corporations who use woke policies to discriminate against their workers.”

Trump also highlighted Dhillon’s prominence in election law, calling her “one of the leading election lawyers in the country,” and emphasized her dedication to ensuring that “all, and only legal votes are counted.” He expressed confidence that in her new role, Dhillon will vigorously defend Americans’ constitutional rights and enforce civil rights and election laws with fairness and integrity.

Dhillon is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia School of Law. She previously clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. She is also a practicing member of the Sikh faith.

Dhillon leads the Dhillon Law Group, a firm that has expanded significantly in both reach and influence over the years. According to its website, the Group is recognized for its role in high-profile litigation involving constitutional and election law, business and employment disputes, and defamation cases. Dhillon has built a team of attorneys who share her dedication to the firm’s mission.

The Group has represented a diverse range of clients, including political candidates, journalists, whistleblowers, activists, business owners, and religious organizations, whose rights were at risk, it stated.

“We have also litigated landmark cases across multiple levels of the judiciary, including matters involving free speech, unlawful COVID-19 mandates, medical malpractice on minors, and the unlawful removal of candidates from state ballots,” it added. “We are not afraid to go where other law firms won’t.”
