Indian American lawmakers have strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s newly announced “discounted reciprocal tariffs” on countries worldwide, calling them “reckless and self-destructive.”

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) condemned Trump’s sweeping tariffs, arguing they amount to a tax on working families while benefiting the wealthiest Americans.

“These so-called ‘Liberation Day tariffs,’” Krishnamoorthi said, “are reckless and self-destructive.” He warned that they would inflict financial hardship on Illinois residents, particularly small business owners struggling to stay afloat and families trying to put food on the table.

“Don’t listen to Trump – these do nothing to strengthen our economy or national security. These tariffs isolate the United States on the global stage, alienate our allies, and empower our adversaries – all while forcing America’s seniors and working families to bear the brunt of higher prices,” he added urging all Americans to join him in calling on President Trump to end his disastrous tariff policies before he sends our country into a recession.

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) echoed these concerns, warning that the President’s chaotic tariff policies would harm the U.S. economy, weaken ties with allies, eliminate jobs, and raise prices on everyday goods. “The evidence is clear: Trump’s never been worried about lowering costs; he’s only ever worried about himself,” Rep. Thanedar added.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) criticized that President Trump for implementing unexpected tariffs on “Liberation Day,” arguing that it is an attempt to sabotage the economy. Rep Khanna claimed that the tariffs were imposed without a strategy, consultation, or congressional input, leading to increased prices for goods like cars, groceries, and home repairs, and causing uncertainty for businesses.

Rep. Khanna pointed out that uncertainty has negatively impacted the stock market and 401(k) plans, with concerns rising about a potential recession or stagflation due to Trump’s incoherent and incompetent economic policies.

Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA) dismissed Trump’s claims that tariffs would benefit the economy. “These costs will be passed onto YOU—the American consumer. This is not a tax cut. This is a tax hike,” he warned.

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) stressed that the tariffs would increase costs for all Americans and harm domestic manufacturing, disproportionately impacting small businesses and working families.

Virginia State Senator and Lieutenant Governor candidate, Ghazala Hashmi called Trump’s tariffs one of the largest tax hikes on working families in U.S. history.

“While Trump squeezes our wallets, I’ve been working to lower costs for Virginians by passing paid family leave and protecting Medicaid. I’ll build on that leadership as LG,” added Senator Hashmi.
