European Teams Dominate FIH World Cup Opening Day

European teams made a strong start to the FIH World Cup for men and women following simple but impressive opening ceremonies in Amstelveen and Wavre. Except for India, all other Asian teams in action across the seven matches on the opening day suffered defeats.

In the men’s competition, defending champions Germany comfortably defeated Malaysia 5-1, while England registered an emphatic 4-1 victory over Pakistan. India provided the bright spot for Asia with a 3-1 win over Wales.

In the women’s competition, Australia and the Netherlands began their campaigns with 2-0 victories over Japan and Chile, respectively, while Germany defeated Scotland 3-0. The only draw of the day came in the match between Argentina and the United States, which ended 1-1.

In the final match of the day at Amstelveen, England reasserted its superiority over Pakistan with a convincing 4-1 victory.

Pakistan’s return to the FIH World Cup after a 12-year absence did not bring much cheer to the Green Shirts. Pakistan began positively and earned a penalty corner in the fifth minute, but the opportunity went begging after the ball could not be stopped cleanly.

England responded with a series of attacking moves and took the lead in the 13th minute. Stuart Rushmere made it 1-0 with a neat deflection following a well-executed move by the English forward line.

England earned its first penalty corner in the 17th minute after a brief spell of drama that also saw Pakistan captain A. Mahmud shown a green card.

England doubled its advantage in the 30th minute through Sam Ward. Two minutes later, Samuel Hooper converted a penalty corner with a flick into the net to extend the lead to 3-0.

Pakistan earned a penalty corner a minute later following a successful video referral, but the opportunity went to waste.

James Albery further strengthened England’s position in the 47th minute, converting a penalty corner to make it 4-0.

Pakistan, however, produced a glimpse of the flair and attacking brilliance associated with its teams of the past. In the 51st minute, Arfaz scored an impressive goal to reduce the deficit to 4-1.

The goal proved to be only a consolation as England completed a commanding opening-day victory, while Pakistan was left searching for its first points following its return to the World Cup stage.
