When Discipline Becomes Identity: Inside a 108-Day Yoga Journey

It began as an audacious thought. What if I committed to 108 Surya Namaskars every single day for 108 days? It started with a conversation with a friend and a shared sense of curiosity. Suddenly, the two of us were standing on our mats at 5:30 in the morning of March 1, 2026. We had nothing except the quiet dark and a determination we hoped would hold. 

Today, 48 days in, I pause to reflect. This is recognized in yogic schools of thought as one full mandala. I consider what this practice has already given back.

The transformation has been gradual, and then, suddenly, obvious. There is a fitness in the body now that feels different. It’s not being stronger, but more alive. Flexibility that once seemed like a distant aspiration now appears naturally in daily movement. The practice has quietly assisted in regulating weight, and beyond the physical, something more tranquil has deepened: concentration, clarity, and a steadiness of mind that spills graciously into the rest of the day.

A mandala isn’t simply a cycle of days. It is a crucible. What enters as discipline shows up as identity.

Make no mistake, this has not been a gentle undertaking. Waking at 4:30 am, day after day, regardless of weather, fatigue, or the warm pull of sleep, is where the real practice lives. There were mornings the alarm felt cruel. But discipline is precisely the muscle that strengthens when you choose the mat anyway. The body adapts. The mind, over time, stops negotiating.

One lesson this mandala has taught with particular clarity: do not take this path alone if you can help it. Having a buddy, someone whose commitment mirrors yours, who is already unrolling their mat as you reach changes everything. Accountability is practical, but companionship is something more. It is the difference between enduring a practice and sharing one. I am glad to have found a great partner in Hasrat, who has been practicing with me and inspiring me. 

The next mandala awaits, and so does the full 108-day vision. The sun continues to rise, it always does, and so, gratefully, do we even when travelling or have to wake up even earlier in case of early meetings.
