US Ambassador Sergio Gor Visits Golden Temple, Discusses Sikh Issues With SGPC Leaders

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on September 28 and held discussions with senior Sikh religious leaders on issues concerning the community, including the Sikh principle of human equality and matters relating to Sikhs in the United States.

Gor was welcomed at the shrine by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami and Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht.

Dhami said Gor told Sikh leaders that this was his second visit to the Golden Temple, having first visited the shrine with his parents about 15 years ago.

“He shared memories of his earlier visit. We welcomed him on behalf of the SGPC and also sat together and discussed some issues concerning Sikhs,” Dhami told reporters after the meeting.

Dhami said the SGPC also referred to an earlier episode involving what it described as a hateful image concerning Sikhs in the United States. The SGPC had taken up the matter with US authorities by email and the image was subsequently removed, he said.

“No memorandum was submitted to the ambassador,” Dhami added.

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj said his discussion with Gor included the Sikh Gurus’ message of equality and the principle of equality embodied in the US Declaration of Independence.

“The message from Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib is one of human equality and universal brotherhood,” Gargajj said.

He also referred to historical links between the Sikh empire and the United States, saying Americans had served in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s forces.

Gargajj said Gor had come to the Golden Temple seeking spiritual peace and left the shrine happy after his visit.

Asked separately about recent student protests and violence at Lovely Professional University (LPU), Gargajj said burning vehicles, vandalizing universities and looting property were not representative of Punjab or Punjabis.

“Burning vehicles, vandalizing universities and looting property is not the character of Punjab and Punjabis,” he said.

He called for a thorough investigation into the LPU episode and urged the university administration to take steps to restore peace. (UNI)
