The Consulate General of India in Seattle hosted multi-city celebrations marking the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21, 2025, with events held across 14 cities in eight states throughout the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
Thousands of yoga enthusiasts gathered at iconic venues in Seattle, Shoreline, Spokane, and Vancouver in Washington; Corvallis and Hillsboro in Oregon; Omaha in Nebraska; Fargo in North Dakota; Vermillion and Sioux Falls in South Dakota; Boise in Idaho; Bozeman and Missoula in Montana; and Laramie in Wyoming. Participants included individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, local government dignitaries, and leaders from the Indian American community, according to a statement issued by the Consulate.
The flagship event took place at Seattle’s scenic Waterfront Park, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Olympic Mountains and the Puget Sound.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell addressed attendees and issued an official proclamation recognizing yoga as a gift from India, stating that Yoga, “originating in India, over 5000 years ago, and first mentioned in the ancient sacred texts of the Rig Veda, is a profound practice that continues to benefit humanity, by promoting both physical health and mental well-being.”
In the lead-up to the main celebration, the Consulate hosted curtain-raiser events at the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington on May 21 and at Bellevue Downtown Park on June 14. Both events saw strong turnout, particularly among youth and yoga practitioners.
In a notable gesture of recognition, the mayors of Bellevue, Seattle, and Spokane, along with King County officials in Washington State, issued official proclamations commemorating the International Day of Yoga and acknowledging India’s role in introducing the ancient practice to the global community.
