Indian Missions Across U.S. Mark Mahatma Gandhi’s 156th Birth Anniversary with Tribute and Cultural Events

Indian diplomatic missions across the United States commemorated the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2025, with ceremonies, cultural programs, and tributes underscoring his enduring message of “non-violence, peace, and truth.”

Washington, D.C.

At the Indian Embassy, Ambassador Vinay Kwatra paid homage to Gandhi, describing him as the “Father of the Nation.” In his message Kwatra said, “His [Mahatma’s] message of peace and non-violence continues to guide and inspire the whole humanity.”

Seattle

In collaboration with the Gates Foundation, the Consulate General of India in Seattle hosted a celebration highlighting Indian culture, arts, and cuisine. The event was attended by Bill Gates, Chair and Board Member of the Gates Foundation, as well as senior leaders from Washington State and Seattle’s city government.

“It’s fitting that we’re coming together on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. The ideals he championed, the equality and dignity of every person, are foundational to the work we do,” Gates said. He added, “Today, India stands as a global leader in innovation and is pioneering solutions with the potential to save and improve millions of lives across the Global South. We look forward to continuing to partner with India on its journey toward Viksit Bharat 2047.”

The Seattle program also featured a keynote by Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, on “The Relevance of Gandhian Values in Contemporary World Order.” Floral tributes were offered at Gandhi statues in Bellevue and at Seattle Center, with Washington State Senator Vandana Slatter and MLK–Gandhi Foundation Chairman Eddie Rye in attendance. Indian-American leaders and school children participated with renditions of Gandhi’s favorite hymns.

Houston

In Houston, Consul General D.C. Manjunath, joined by members of the Eternal Gandhi Museum and the Indo-American community, paid floral tributes. 

The event included patriotic songs honoring Gandhi’s philosophy. On the International Day of Non-Violence, CG Manjunath highlighted the Museum’s role in preserving Gandhi’s values for future generations, emphasizing “peace, compassion, and moral courage.”

New York

Community members in New York gathered to honor Gandhi with floral tributes and devotional music. Consul General Binaya Pradhan remarked that Gandhi’s message extended beyond outcomes to the means of achieving them, with non-violence remaining central to his philosophy.

Atlanta

The Consulate in Atlanta, led by Consul General Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan, joined the Gandhi Foundation USA at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center to commemorate the occasion. Attendees reflected on the shared legacy of Gandhi and Dr. King, paying tributes both at the MLK Center and at the Gandhi bust at the Consulate.

San Francisco

In San Francisco, Consul General Dr. K. Srikar Reddy offered floral tributes at the Gandhi statue near the city’s Ferry Building. He noted that Gandhi’s timeless message of non-violence continues to resonate globally.
