The Global Indian Diaspora Foundation (GIDF) joined the City of Appleton in Wisconsin to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, on October 23, 2025, a timeless tradition symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

The evening at Appleton City Hall was filled with color and community spirit as Mayor Jake Woodford read the official Diwali Proclamation, declaring October 23 as “Diwali Awareness Day” in Appleton. The celebration began with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp, symbolizing hope, wisdom, and universal harmony. The gesture honored the shared values of light, joy, and togetherness that Diwali represents for millions across the globe, according to a statement from GIDF.

“Diwali reminds us of the universal values of light over darkness and good over evil,” said Mayor Woodford. “As Appleton grows more diverse, this celebration honors the vibrant Indian American community whose contributions continue to enrich the social, cultural, and economic life of our city.”

Representing GIDF were Rakesh Malhotra, President; Abhinav Raina, General Secretary; and Chetan Natoria, Director of Community Affairs. They joined hands with the city’s leadership to mark the occasion as a proud moment for the Indian diaspora. Also in attendance was Anindita “Andy” Anaam, Director of Communications, Office of the Mayor, who acknowledged the Foundation’s continued efforts to promote cross-cultural understanding.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful people of Appleton and to Hon. Mayor Jake Woodford for celebrating Diwali with us and proclaiming Diwali Awareness Day in this beautiful city,” said GIDF President Rakesh Malhotra. “This gesture shines a bright light on the values that connect all communities — light, hope, and unity.”

As the lamps glowed and Diwali greetings were exchanged, the event became a symbol of peace, prosperity, and cultural solidarity. The proclamation ceremony highlighted Appleton’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and cultural appreciation — reaffirming the city’s tradition of honoring diverse communities that enrich its civic and social fabric.

The Global Indian Diaspora Foundation is a worldwide platform dedicated to celebrating Indian cultural heritage, unity, and civic engagement. Through events, proclamations, and partnerships, GIDF works to strengthen bridges between the Indian diaspora and local communities, fostering friendship, pride, and shared values of service and harmony.
