Indian American Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, representing Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, took to the House floor on February 13, 2025, to condemn the Trump administration’s continued attacks on federal workers and contractors. He highlighted their crucial roles in saving taxpayer money, maintaining public safety, and protecting national health.
Speaking on behalf of over 34,000 federal employees and thousands of contractors in his district, Subramanyam warned that ongoing “mistreatment,” and job cuts would weaken national security, disrupt essential public services, and ultimately burden taxpayers with higher costs.
As a member of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, he has called for an investigation into unlawful firings of federal employees and unconstitutional freezes on congressionally approved funding.
“I rise because many people want to paint federal workers and contractors as unskilled bureaucrats who waste taxpayer dollars. But the reality is the opposite, and I know this because Virginia is home to hundreds of thousands of our country’s federal workers and contractors, and I’ve heard from many of them,” he told the House Floor.
He emphasized that federal employees not only save taxpayer money but also safeguard public well-being despite heavy bureaucratic constraints. Most bring specialized expertise that is difficult to replace.
Citing specific cases, he shared concerns from a USDA employee who warned that job cuts in her department – responsible for protecting U.S. crops – could lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in future losses. He also highlighted the case of a contractor supporting anti-terrorism efforts overseas who was fired despite a strong record in countering extremism.
Border security is also at risk, he noted, as one contractor responsible for vetting refugees was forced to lay off 100 security experts due to budget cuts.
“No one will want to serve our government if federal workers and contractors are treated this way, and the attacks on federal civil servants will cost taxpayers money and make all Americans less safe and less healthy,” he added.
