The United States convened the first G20 Sherpa meeting of its 2026 Presidency in Washington on December 15 and 16, 2025, describing the discussions as “successful.”

The meeting brought together representatives from the African Union, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom. Poland participated as the only full guest country during the U.S. host year.

The United States formally assumed the G20 Presidency on December 1, coinciding with the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Under President Donald Trump’s leadership, the United States has stated that it is committed to refocusing the G20 on its core economic mandate and delivering tangible economic outcomes. According to a State Department statement, President Trump will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit from December 14 to 15, 2026, at Trump National Doral Miami.

“At the first event of the U.S. G20 presidency, the United States reiterated its core thematic priorities: unleashing economic prosperity by limiting regulatory burdens, unlocking reliable and affordable energy options, and pioneering new innovative technologies,” the statement said. It added that the United States launched working groups to develop concrete deliverables aligned with each of these priorities, along with an additional working group aimed at identifying areas of consensus on trade issues.

The four working groups established for the U.S. host year are focused on key economic issues that the administration considers appropriate for discussion at the leaders’ level.
