Indian American Devinder Mahajan, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering and director of the Institute of Gas Innovation and Technology (I-GIT) at Stony Brook University, has been named to the Class of 2024 SUNY Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF).
A Chemistry graduate of Panjab University, Chandigarh, Dr. Mahajan has a distinguished career spanning decades. Before joining Stony Brook University in 2002 and earning tenure, he served as a scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory from 1988.
The SUNY TAF is a prestigious program that provides critical support to faculty inventors and scientists across the SUNY system. This year, the fund awarded $425,000 to advance seven groundbreaking projects with the potential to revolutionize healthcare, environmental protection, and high-tech industries in New York.
“The award recognizes Mahajan’s groundbreaking research in developing a single system for storing and releasing blended hydrogen and methane under near-ambient temperature and pressure conditions. This innovative system addresses the significant challenges associated with efficiently storing and releasing hydrogen on demand, a critical step toward a sustainable energy future,” noted a statement.
Administered by the SUNY Research Foundation, the TAF program bridges the gap between academic research and commercial application. By funding essential milestones such as feasibility studies, prototyping, and testing, the program enhances the market readiness of innovative technologies, making them more attractive to potential investors.
Since its inception in 2011, the TAF program has been a cornerstone of innovation within the SUNY system. To date, it has invested over $3.5 million, advancing 72 cutting-edge projects and catalyzing more than $16 million in follow-on funding from government agencies, industry partners, and early-stage investors.
