Meera Satpathy, founder and chairperson of the nonprofit organization Sukarya, received the inaugural “Legacy Leadership – Makers of Tomorrow” Award at the Legacy Leaders Grand Finale on October 23 in Mumbai.

The initiative, led by the Arvind Mafatlal Group in association with Network18, recognizes individuals for their sustained leadership and contributions to Indian society, according to a statement from Sukarya. Satpathy was among 10 leaders honored for their work in social welfare and nation-building.

The recognition marks Satpathy’s 28 years of work with underserved communities in India. Since founding Sukarya in 1998, she has focused on maternal and child health, gender equality, education for disadvantaged children and young people, and women’s economic empowerment.

“Under her steadfast guidance, Sukarya has scaled its impact immensely, transforming from a localized effort into a vital lifeline that has reached over 7.8 million people,” the statement noted.

According to the organization, its work spans more than 800 remote villages and 230 urban slums across four Indian states, providing “critical healthcare, nutritional support, and educational resources.”

“Her legacy lies not only in the institution she has built, but in the millions of lives transformed, the societal barriers challenged, the marginalized voices strengthened, and the endless possibilities created for generations to come,” a Sukarya spokesperson said following the ceremony.

The “Legacy Leadership – Makers of Tomorrow” platform launched on October 22 to recognize individuals whose work has contributed to social development in India.

Sukarya thanked the Arvind Mafatlal Group and Network18 for recognizing grassroots social work and congratulated the nine other honorees.

The organization works to improve health, expand access to basic education, and strengthen economic opportunities for women in marginalized communities.
